California’s Pesticide Regulation for Cannabis

California’s approach to cannabis pesticide regulation is among the most complex and comprehensive in the world. Since no pesticides are federally approved for cannabis (thanks to its Schedule 1 status), California had to build its own system from scratch. The state banned some pesticides entirely and set residue limits for others, balancing safety with practicality. They considered common agricultural practices and consulted other cannabis-legal states like Washington and Colorado. Today, California tests for 66 pesticides, splitting them into two categories: banned (Category I) and restricted with allowable limits (Category II). This approach acknowledges real-world challenges like pesticide drift from neighboring farms and contamination from other ingredients used in cannabis products. Learn more about Pure Roots
